The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new data on the link, or lack thereof, between the COVID-19 vaccine and sudden cardiac death in young adults otherwise in good health.
The assessment, conducted between June 2021 and December 2022, studied death certificates and vaccination records of 1,292 Oregon decedents ages 16 to 30 who died of “cardiac or undetermined” causes.
“Data do not support an association between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden cardiac death in previously healthy youth,” the CDC determined. The vaccine remains recommended for anyone over 6 months of age.
Health misinformation:Four years after Covid, misinformation still endangers the health of some Americans. Here’s why.
CDC studies cardiac deaths and the COVID vaccine
The CDC said in its analysis that reports of myocarditis, particularly in young men, were reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) around the time the vaccine became available to young people in 2021. Myocarditis, also known as inflammatory cardiomyopathy, is often caused by viral infections and leads to inflammation and damage to the heart muscle.
These reports, coupled with subsequent media coverage of sudden deaths among previously healthy young athletes implicitly caused by the vaccine, prompted the CDC to launch an investigation.
Using death certificates and Oregon’s mandatory immunization records, the CDC identified people ages 16 to 30 whose causes of death were listed as “sudden death,” “arrhythmia,” “dysrhythmia », “asystole”, “cardiac arrest”, “myocarditis”, “congestive heart failure”, “unknown”, “undetermined” or “waiting”.
Oregon’s 1,292 cases were then separated by gender: 925 (72%) were male and 367 (28%) were female. Investigators then extracted COVID-19 mRNA vaccination records from these cases in the 100 days before death.
- Of the 925 young men in the study, two people received the mRNA COVID vaccine within 100 days of death and a cardiac diagnosis could not be ruled out as the cause of death, the study found.
- Of the student’s 367 young women, one person received the mRNA COVID vaccine within 100 days of death and a cardiac diagnosis could not be ruled out as the cause of death, the study found.
Fact check:No, DNA fragments in COVID-19 vaccines are not linked to ‘major safety concerns’
Risk of heart problems higher after COVID infection, not after vaccine: CDC
As of July 17, 2023, no fatal cases of myocarditis in Oregon have been reported to VAERS. Additionally, a total of 979,289 doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered to Oregonians ages 16-30 between May 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022.
The CDC said data collected from 40 U.S. health systems between January 2021 and January 2022 showed that the risk of heart complications in people over 5 years old was significantly higher after COVID-19 infection than after administration of the COVID vaccine.
These results are consistent with previous research on the safety and effectiveness of the mRNA vaccine. As such, the CDC recommends vaccination and booster shots for people over six months of age to prevent COVID-19 and serious complications or death.
