Car theft attempt leaves one dead in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) has identified a man they believe died after attempting to steal a car from a Mastin Lake Road business.
HPD identified the deceased man as Menterra Gurley, 25.
An HPD spokesperson said officers responded to a call for a shooting at a business in the 2900 block of Mastin Lake Road shortly after 6 a.m. Friday.
Investigators say when a man left his vehicle and entered the business, another man attempted to steal the vehicle. That’s when authorities say the owner of the vehicle returned and confronted the man, repeatedly asking him to get out.
The HPD said the man then tried to flee and the owner of the vehicle shot him.
The spokesperson said the man who attempted to steal the car was transported by HEMSI with life-threatening injuries, but was pronounced dead at Huntsville Hospital.
After reviewing the case with the Madison County District Attorney’s Office, it has been determined that no charges will be filed at this time, the HPD spokesperson said. The case will later appear before a Madison County grand jury.
