A car rammed into a group of people at a carnival in Belgium early on Sunday, killing six people and seriously injuring 10 others, authorities said.

“A car left from behind at high speed. And we have a few dozen injured and unfortunately several people killed,” said the mayor of La Louvière, Jacques Gobert.

A crowd of more than 150 people had gathered in Strépy-Bracquegnies, located about 30 km south of Brussels, at dawn for the start of the carnival celebrations.

“At this stage, there is no evidence that the attack had a terrorist motive,” prosecutor Damien Verheyen told a press conference.

Initial media reports indicated that the car had potentially been involved in a high-speed chase with police prior to the crash. The prosecutor’s office denied the information later Sunday.

The driver and a second person were arrested after the car came to a stop.
