Canelo vs Golovkin 3 scholarship: prize money for world super middleweight title fight

The pair face off for Mexico’s world super middleweight titles tonight after battling to a spectacular draw in 2017 before Canelo secured a narrow victory a year later.

Now they are reuniting with the 32-year-old who is said to be guaranteed to receive £7m as base pay rate plus around £47.5m as PPV bonus.

This is compared to a base rate of £7m for Golovkin and £30m in PPV bonuses despite the middleweight champion having won his last four fights, unlike Canelo who dropped out of his clash light heavyweight with Dmitry Bivol earlier this year.

Canelo taunted his rival about the purse involved in the fight, saying Golovkin only wanted to end their four-year wait for a third fight because of the money involved.

“I was busy fighting with the best fighters out there,” Canelo said.

“That is why [it took four years for the third fight]. Sure [he’s waited around and not done anything but wait for me].

“He wants his last day of pay. Watch my fights after GGG, and watch his fights. He doesn’t talk shit anymore because he has me in front of him now. Call the lion when you see him coming – and I’m coming.
