Canelo previously won titles at super welterweight (154lb), middleweight (160lb), super middleweight (168lb) and moved up to lightweight (175lb) for a one-off bout in 2019.

In that fight, he was undersized, but still knocked out Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO belt.

Many did not expect Canelo to return to the 175-pound division after winning a world title in this one-off fight.

However, he has now achieved everything he desired at 168lbs as he won all four belts and crowned himself the undisputed champion last year.

Canelo defeated Callum Smith for the vacant WBA and WBC titles in December 2020.

He then stopped Billy Joe Saunders for the WBO strap in May 2021 and won the IBF belt with a knockout of Caleb Plant in November 2021.

Looking for a new challenge, he once again headed to light heavyweight.

Some have claimed that Russian champion Bivol should not be allowed to face Canelo due to the country’s current invasion of Ukraine.

When the fighter himself spoke to reporters, he gave his opinion on the conflict.

β€œOf course it affected me because I have a lot of friends in Ukraine,” Bivol said, β€œI have a lot of friends and relatives in Russia.

“The only thing I want is for everything to go back to normal and everyone to be at peace.”

He later added, β€œIt’s really sad for me.

“Every day I wake up and read the news and hope it will stop.”
