Candace Owens said her colleague and fellow right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro should be “embarrassed” amid an online feud between the two men, and accused him of launching “ad hominem attacks” against her.
Ms Owens, who is known for her outspoken views on issues including the Covid vaccine and the Black Lives Matter movement, said Mr Shapiro had “thrown under a bus”, also accusing her of being “no professional” and “emotionally unbalanced”.
This follows a video shared online showing Mr Shapiro speaking at what appeared to be a private event, during which he called Ms Owens’ “faux sophistication” on certain issues “shameful” and ” ridiculous “.
The two men work together for the right-wing news company The Daily Wire. Although Mr. Shapiro did not reference a specific thing that Ms. Owens said or did in the video, his remarks followed several posts she had made on X.
“No government anywhere has the right to commit genocide. Nothing justifies genocide. I can’t believe this needs to be said or is considered the least controversial to state,” she wrote on November 3.
Her comments were seen as referring to the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel in the Middle East – although Ms Owens did not specifically mention it.
Speaking to Tucker Carlson for his series Tucker On hominem.”
“I can’t answer it intellectually because there’s nothing he expressed in there, at least in this short clip, with which he fundamentally disagrees with what I said ” she said.
“I will say that I’m not going to respond with the same ad hominem attack – I don’t think that helps continue the discussion – what if it was me who was caught on video saying that about colleagues I work with , I would be embarrassed.
“So I think the video is more about Ben’s character than mine.”
Ms Owens added that she had not been contacted by Mr Shapiro – who co-founded the Daily Wire in 2015 – to discuss their disagreements.
“Ben and I have many disagreements, so I don’t think it’s particularly interesting…he’s taken virtually every position opposite of mine on every issue over the last five years. So I don’t think it’s particularly remarkable,” she said.
“I am completely open to people with a difference of opinion. I hope that between colleagues, this will always be a civil disagreement, and I will never stand on a table at a private event and speak ill of Ben.
Ms. Owens then gave “tremendous credit” to the Daily Wire for allowing divergent opinions on the network, but added: “I hope it remains respectful and that you don’t throw your colleagues under a bus so to speak. .”
The feud continued Wednesday evening, after Mr. Shapiro responded to another post on X from Ms. Owens, in which she cited Bible verses and wrote: “You cannot serve both God and ‘money. »
“Candace, if you think that taking money from the Daily Wire somehow comes between you and God, by all means stop,” Mr. Shapiro wrote.
Ms Owens responded: “You have been acting unprofessional and emotionally unbalanced for weeks now. And we all had to sit back and allow it and we all tried to be overly understanding for your raw emotion.
“But you cross a certain line when you come and get the Scriptures and read yourself in them. I will not tolerate it.
