TUESDAY July 20, 2021 (HealthDay News) – Fully vaccinated U.S. travelers will be allowed entry into Canada starting August 9, Canadian officials said on Monday.

Canada’s 14-day quarantine requirement will be lifted for people residing in the United States who are fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine approved in Canada, CBS News reported. The three vaccines available in the United States are also approved in Canada.

Unvaccinated children traveling with vaccinated parents will not have to be quarantined, but will need to avoid group activities, including schools and daycares, Canadian officials said.

Currently, Canadians are allowed to travel to the United States with a negative COVID-19 test, but the United States has not hinted at any plans to change land border restrictions, according to Canada’s Security Minister public, Bill Blair, CBS News reported.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki was evasive when asked if the United States would reciprocate.

“We continue to review our travel restrictions. All decisions about resuming travel will be guided by our public health and medical experts.… I would not consider it with reciprocal intent,” she said, CBS News reported.

Canada leads the G20 countries in terms of vaccination rates, with approximately 80% of eligible Canadians vaccinated with their first dose and over 50% of those eligible fully vaccinated, CBS News mentionned.

“This weekend, we even overtook the United States in terms of people fully vaccinated,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. “With increasing vaccination rates and declining COVID-19 cases, we are able to move forward with adjusted border measures.”

At the start of the pandemic, the US and Canadian governments closed the more than 5,500 mile border between them to non-essential traffic. With vaccination rates rising and infection rates falling, some have been upset that the two governments have not made plans to fully reopen the border, CBS News reported.
