Canada to return key part of Nord Stream pipeline – POLITICO

Canada will allow delivery of a key component to help deliver Russian gas to Germany, Ottawa announced overnight, despite pleas from Ukraine to delay the return of the equipment.

The question of whether to grant an exception to the sanctions against Russia in order to repair the Nord Stream 1 pipeline has seen Canada torn between the demands of Germany, which remains dependent on Russian fuel, and the demands of the Ukraine to reduce Russian sources of income.

Canada will grant a “time-limited and revocable permit” for Siemens to deliver turbines to Germany after they have been serviced in Montreal, says Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announcement.

He cited threats to the German economy and the risks that Germans would be “unable to heat their homes as winter approaches” without the gas supply.

Russian energy giant Gazprom blamed the late return of the turbines for a recent 40% reduction in gas deliveries through the pipeline.

However, Ukrainian officials have strongly contested this assessment, arguing that Russia was free to route its gas through Ukraine instead. Energy Minister German Galushchenko urged the Canadian government not to exempt the component from sanctions last month, according to a letter obtained by POLITICO.

Still, German politicians have expressed growing concern over the prospect that Moscow will use the missing equipment as an excuse to limit gas supplies. On Sunday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz applauded the decision of “our Canadian friends and allies”, German media reported.
