Canada sanctions Putin and reveals its position on SWIFT – RT Russia and the former Soviet Union

Ottawa has accused Moscow of waging a ‘war on freedom’ with its military operation in Ukraine

Canada has imposed sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has revealed. The move follows similar announcements from the UK, EU and US. The Canadian PM blamed Russian leaders for the “barbaric war » against freedom and democracy by announcing sanctions.

The measurement is part of “severe and coordinated sanctions” that Canada and its allies impose on people who “bears the greatest responsibility for the deaths and destruction that have occurred in Ukraine”, Trudeau said at a press conference in Ottawa on Friday.

Calling the Russian military operation in Ukraine a “unwarranted and unprovoked invasion”, the Prime Minister also said Canada would sanction 57 more people in Belarus for their alleged role.

Trudeau echoed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s call to remove Russia from the SWIFT international banking system. Several EU countries have opposed such a move, warning it would cut them off from vital resources they continue to buy from Russia, such as oil and gas.

The Canadian Prime Minister has accused Russia of leading “the war against freedom, against democracy and against the rights of Ukrainians and all peoples to determine their own future”, while praising Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “the embodiment of the courage of the Ukrainian people.”

“I am inspired by his determination and devotion to his country,” said Trudeau.

On Thursday, Moscow announced that its troops would enter Ukraine to “demilitarize and denazify” the country and “defend” the population of the separatist republics of Donetsk and Luhansk of “genocide.” Zelensky accused Russia of unprovoked aggression and said Ukraine had no plan for a full-scale attack on the Donbas republics.
