Camera comparison: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs Galaxy S22 Ultra

If you didn’t manage to take a look at our ever-growing practice with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, we’ve added an impromptu shootout to its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Here it is, taken from that article in its entirety.

Now that we’ve had a few extra minutes with the new Galaxies, we decided to do a quick photo shoot between the new Ultra and the old one. We took a few shots outdoors in well-lit conditions and indoors in less well-lit conditions.

This will be a quick side-by-side. You should wait for our in-depth review where we’ll take a deeper dive into all the new Galaxy S23 Ultra cameras.

With that out of the way, let’s look at some samples. We captured two scenes at the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 1x, 3x, and 10x zoom level to compare them to the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s equivalent cameras. The 200MP sensor produces more detail than the 108MP one, even at the 12MP pixel resolution. Sharpness is increased on Galaxy S23 Ultra shots compared to S22 Ultra shots, increasing the feeling of higher detail.

3x and 10x images are also sharper on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, noticeably at that. There’s a bit more noise but we’ll gladly accept that in exchange for a higher level of detail. The Galaxy S23 Ultra retains fine textures, which its predecessor simply smeared to nothingness.

The next images are taken indoors. The image of the sofa is relatively well lit. The photo of the shelves is in lower light, while the final image of our cleaning cupboard is in near complete darkness.

Images from the Galaxy S22 Ultra are sharper but less detailed. The Galaxy S23 Ultra captures a much higher level of detail in exchange for some noise. Again, we like compromise. It’s impressive how much more detail you get with the new 200MP sensor – note the Kodak Instamatic 33 lettering (if you can spot it) – it’s nearly unreadable on the Galaxy S22 Ultra and fully readable on the Galaxy S23 Ultra .
