Calls for ceasefire grow as Israel steps up military operations in Gaza – POLITICO

The United Nations has warned of a large-scale ground attack on Rafah, saying it would lead to an “epic humanitarian disaster” and undermine attempts to support refugees amid looming famine. US President Joe Biden called Israel’s ground offensive against Rafah a “red line,” warning that the United States would suspend arms deliveries if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pursues the possible attack.

On Sunday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres used a video address at a humanitarian conference in Kuwait to call, once again, for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages and an immediate increase in humanitarian aid.”

A ceasefire “will only be the beginning. It will be a long road to recovery from the devastation and trauma of this war,” Guterres said.

An Israeli offensive in Rafah also does not have the support of the British government, says Foreign Secretary David Cameron said on Sunday.

“We don’t think they should embark on a major operation in Rafah unless they have a plan to move people and make sure they have shelter, food and medicine,” Cameron told the BBC. “We have not seen this plan, so we do not support a major operation in Rafah,” he added.

But Cameron opposed calls to suspend arms supplies to Israel. “Just to announce today: we are going to change our entire approach to arms exports rather than following our careful process – it would strengthen Hamas, it would make a hostage deal less likely, I don’t think that that would be the best solution,” he said.
