LA VERNE, California — A 3-year-old pet dog survived a violent attack by a mountain lion in the backyard of a home in La Verne, California, over the weekend.

The owner’s Ring camera captured the moment the mountain lion lunged at the family’s beloved pet.

The frightening attack happened around 9pm on Saturday, when Holly Jolly, a Giant Schnauzer, usually goes out before settling in for the night.

Holly Jolly’s owner, Nicole, said her dog was sniffing before the 93-pound pup was trapped by the cougar’s mouth.

As the attack unfolded, the family heard Holly Jolly’s screams.

Nicole’s husband then came out. His screams seemed to scare the mountain lion, giving the dog the opportunity to run away and escape.

“She had surgery. She had a lot of puncture wounds, a lot of stitches,” Nicole told Eyewitness News. “They said there were a lot of them.”

Nicole said that after the terrifying encounter, their camera caught the big cat returning 20 minutes later. The video shows the cougar sniffing the collar of the dog left in the fight.

Holly Jolly is now on the road to recovery.

The couple posted the video to alert their neighbors.

“We’re cautious, but I think we’ve always been concerned about coyotes and other animals, but a mountain lion is literally a new beast to us,” Leslie Simone said.
