California Congressman Raul Ruiz vaccinates his own voters against the coronavirus

Washington – When Congress is out, the doctor is there.

California Congressman Raul Ruiz is an emergency room doctor who trades a suit coat for a lab coat for vaccinate his own constituents.

“For me, it’s doctor,” Ruiz told CBS News. “It turns me back in my heart and in my soul.”

Her heart and soul are her desert neighborhood outside of Los Angeles.

Almost half of the population is Hispanic. But they represent 65% of COVID infections and only 19% received the vaccine.

“I come from that same community of medically underserved individuals. My parents were farm workers, ”Ruiz said. “I always dreamed of being a doctor and coming back and serving the underserved.”

Ruiz had coronavirus earlier this year and has just been vaccinated. Now he is administering hundreds of doses.

“This is not the mechanics of vaccination. It gives hope,” he said. “I love doing it … as a member of Congress to show that government has to work for the people.”
