Caleb Williams’ dream of being the No. 1 pick will be fulfilled Thursday

There will be no drama at the top of the draft Thursday night.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams will be the No. 1 overall pick. He knows it. The Bears know it. Everybody knows it.

“Like a kid, I dreamed of it” Williams said Wednesday, via Dan Wiederer of Chicago Tribune. “I set my goals. I went after. Got it. I am here. I’m ready for now.

Williams began dreaming of this day when he was 10 years old: He would hear his name called. He will wear a Bears baseball cap. He will kiss Commissioner Roger Goodell. He will pose for photos with the Bears’ No. 1 jersey.

Williams called it “surreal.”

“I’m definitely ready,” Williams said. “Because I want to come back to a football team. I haven’t been on a football team since November 18th (for his last game at USC). So that was probably the hardest part for me. This is something I really want to come back to. Get back in the locker room, be with the guys, get involved every day and let it rip.

Williams has dined with future teammates, including TJ Edwards, DJ Moore and Cole Kmet, and he has spent enough time with general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus over the past three months to solidify a relationship.

“It’s been fun being around them,” Williams said of Poles and Eberflus. “They are very detailed. They always have a plan. And they seem to be very routine, and that’s how I’ve been throughout my life.

The hardest part begins Friday on the first day of the rest of his career.
