CAA recognizes Belaya, Gish – UNC Wilmington Athletics

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Transfers of graduates Sacha Belaya and Lauren Gish from UNCW were recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association for their outstanding play during the just-concluded 2021-22 women’s tennis season.

Belaya, a native of Melbourne, Fla., produced and transferred from Illinois, was named All-CAA First Team Singles and joined Gish as the All-CAA First Team Doubles winner. Gish, of Mooresville, North Carolina, transferred to UNCW this season from Vanderbilt.

Belaya played in all 13 of her No. 1 singles matches and went 8-5, including 3-3 against CAA opponents. Belaya, a two-time CAA Player of the Week selection, has recorded wins over opponents Charleston, Eastern Carolina and Penn State this season.

“Sasha is a terrific competitor on the singles court,” said Hans Olsen, UNCW head coach. “The bigger the moment, the more Sasha brought the elite version of herself. More important than all the incredible wins she has had on the pitch this season is her character as a person. Sasha is honest and his integrity is unquestionable. I am honored to have coached him.”

Belaya and Gish combined for a sparkling 11-3 in doubles No. 1 for the Seahawks. The tandem, which has won wins over teams from Charleston, Furman, Maryland and Penn State this spring, went 3-2 against conference opponents and won its final four games of the campaign.

Olsen said, “Sasha and Lauren were one of the best doubles teams in college tennis this year. In the fall, they won the elite at the Naval Academy Invitational. They carried that momentum into the spring and helped the team to get the doubles point in 14 games. As a doubles team they had their own brand of chemistry on the court which started with really good communication. I applaud Lauren and Sasha for their accomplishments on the doubles court this season.

The Seahawks finished the season with a 12-7 doubleheader record before failing at the CAA Championships in Elon, North Carolina.
