Burning electric vehicle batteries complicate firefighting efforts of ship adrift in Atlantic Ocean

The large number of electric vehicles aboard a burning ship adrift in the Atlantic Ocean is complicating efforts to extinguish the blaze, Dutch experts hired to save the ship said on Sunday.

It is not known if the fire was caused by the electric cars, whose lithium-ion batteries are known to catch fire, but the presence of burning batteries on board means that SMIT Salvage, the company contracted to save the ship, is dealing with a fire that is spreading fast and cannot be fought with water alone, the company’s owners said.
