A German footballer has been arrested by police in Ibiza on suspicion of raping a Spanish teenager.
Atakan Karazor, 25, who plays for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, was detained with a man of the same age after the 18-year-old girl told detectives she had been sexually assaulted at a villa in the municipality of San Jose , a short drive from the island’s airport.
Stuttgart confirmed Karazor was being held and said they were now in “permanent contact” with their legal team.
The two men, who are both German, were reportedly detained hours after the alleged attack on Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear this morning whether the arrested men appeared before an investigating judge in an initial hearing.
The closed hearing would take place to decide whether they should be released on bail pending an ongoing criminal investigation or remanded in custody.
A Civil Guard spokesperson confirmed: “Two German nationals have been arrested after a woman told police she had been sexually assaulted in Ibiza.
“An investigation is underway.”
The villa where the alleged sexual assault took place is believed to be near Cova Santa, an ancient natural cave with a large restaurant, garden lounge and club where shows and concerts are held during the summer.
Court officials could not be reached early this morning for comment on the case.
