Bruins’ Carlo scores goal in playoff game on same day son is born

A Boston Bruins player scored a crucial goal in the opening game of the team’s second-round playoff series on the same day his second child was born. Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo said his wife, Mayson, gave birth to their son, Crew, around 3 a.m. Monday. Carlo missed the morning skate before the first game against the Florida Panthers in Sunrise, Fla., and Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery wasn’t sure but hoped Carlo would arrive in time for the match. At 2 p.m., Carlo hopped on a flight to Florida and was able to arrive in time for the game. “I’m so grateful, so proud of my wife,” Carlo said. “I’m really grateful to the Bruins, as well as the Jacobs, for the way they handled the situation. It was incredible, the support they gave me.” The Bruins shared a video on social media showing Carlo arriving at Amerant Bank Arena before the game and being congratulated by his teammates in the locker room. With 21 seconds left in the second period, Carlo scored a goal that gave the Bruins a 3-1 lead over the Panthers. The Bruins went on to win the game 5-1. “I don’t celebrate often, but I got my hand raised with that one,” Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman said. “It’s so amazing what he did today and the attitude he brought. He was so excited. “I can only imagine what it’s like to leave your little one and your wife to home right after,” Swayman added. “Mayson is a big part of this team for that reason too: to allow him to come and be here and support him. “After Game 1, Carlo is +5 in Boston’s first eight playoff games, with two goals and an assist. The 27-year-old has now appeared in 67 career playoff games with the Bruins and had four goals and nine assists with a +12 rating. Crew Carlo was born less than two days after his father and the Bruins celebrated a thrilling Game 7 overtime win against the Toronto Maple Leafs Brandon and Mayson. Carlo have a daughter, Wren, born in September 2021.
