Hou Guanyu was taken to the medical center after crashing into the barriers in a multi-car crash during the first lap of the British Grand Prix.
The Alfa Romeo driver had to be pulled from the car following an accident involving George Russell, Alex Albon, Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, causing an immediate red flag.
Russell immediately jumped out of his Mercedes car and ran to check on Zhou, who reportedly remained conscious throughout the accident.
He was taken off track in an ambulance but was moving at the time.
The other cars still in the race returned to their respective garages as marshals worked to remove damaged cars, including Zhou’s heavily built-in Alfa Romeo.
An FIA statement confirmed: “Zhou and Albon have been taken to the medical center. Both were conscious and will be evaluated at the medical centre.
On the initial start, Max Verstappen got the better of pole sitter Carlos Sainz after starting on soft tires rather than the Spaniard’s medium tyres.
In addition to Zhou, Albon was also treated as a precaution following his involvement in the accident. Williams confirmed Albon was airlifted to hospital in Coventry for precautionary checks.
After this dramatic accident, there were protesters who climbed the fence, broke into the track and lay down on it.
In a statement, Formula 1 said: “We can confirm that after the red flag several people attempted to enter the track. These people were immediately expelled and the matter is now being dealt with by local authorities.
