Former Springboks captain Jean de Villiers joins Will Greenwood in the latest Lions podcast, looking back on the Lions vs SA tours in 1997, 2009 and this summer …

De Villiers, who won 109 caps for South Africa between 2002 and 2015, faced and beat the Lions as Springbok in 2009 in two tests.

Greenwood and De Villiers discuss the Lions’ 2-1 winning streak in South Africa in 1997, and that brutally physical streak in 2009, which the Boks won 2-1.

The pair also look back at the first two tests of the 2021 Lions tour of South Africa, apply the rule on the team selections for the third test and preview Saturday’s huge clash, which is live on Sky sports.

“The human body is probably not made for playing rugby. After every test match your body is sore the next day, but then – when I watch this match again – and you see doctors running around, having to go. deal with that type and then the other, ”De Villiers said of the second test in 2009.

“Then you think about it, and you say to yourself – I understand why my body feels like this.

“The ebb and flow, the ups and downs of that first test – and even more of the second test match – I’m so lucky to be a part of this series, because I thought it was so intense, so captivating. … It was very pleasant but difficult. “

During Morne Steyn’s long-range kick in 2009, De Villiers added: “Morne immediately approached John Smit and said: ‘I want this’.

“Frans Steyn could have taken the shot as well, and he certainly has the distance, but Morne wanted him – home ground, in his second test game… And he puts it in so easily.

“Post the kick, you could just see he was so in the zone, because he passes it down the middle with another 10 yards to go, then he casually leans in, picks up his tee and just wants to get off the pitch!”

Will Greenwood hosts a weekly Lions podcast as tourists to Warren Gatland take on world champions Springboks over the summer – all matches on the 2021 tour will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
