It happened Wednesday afternoon on Brighton Beach Avenue, just east of Brighton 4 Street.
The victim, Volf Ferdman, was heading towards the bank at the time of the accident.
Police said a 79-year-old driver was trying to get out of a parking lot.
The Cadillac Escalade he was driving jumped over the curb and struck the victim, pushing him to the front of the bank.
Ferdman was taken to NYU Langone-Brooklyn Hospital where he later died.
His granddaughter, Svetlana Statsyuk, said he was independent and living alone after his wife died last year.
“He loved going out and talking to people, he had friends,” she said.
Ferdman came to the United States about 20 years ago from Ukraine to make fond memories after years of hardship.
His granddaughter said he survived WWII, but never liked to talk about the experience.
Statsyuk said he just celebrated his 97th birthday last month. All of this is difficult for his family to digest.
“How come he’s at such a speed that he’s nailed it to the wall? I don’t know, I’m not passing judgment,” Statsyuk said.
The driver was not injured. The accident remains under investigation.
