Brian Laundrie’s parents are trying to get the Petitos’ lawsuit thrown out

Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino told WFLA-TV in Tampa, Florida that the allegations in the lawsuit – that the laundries knew their son killed Petito on a road trip l year but fell silent – are “baseless” and “frivolous”.

“The Laundries exercised their constitutional right to refrain from speaking and relied on an attorney to speak on their behalf,” Bertolino said in a statement. “This is not only common practice in our civilized society, but it embodies the exercise of fundamental rights under the constitutions of the United States and Florida.”

According to the lawsuit, Laundries did not contact Petito’s parents when their son arrived home in North Port, Florida, without his 22-year-old fiancée. Instead, the family immediately hired a lawyer and, according to the lawsuit, planned to help their son flee the country.

Petito was found dead by strangulation in a national forest in Wyoming on September 19, 2021. Her parents had reported her missing on September 11. His last message on the trip had been sent at the end of August.

“It is believed, and therefore it is proven, that on or about August 28, Brian Laundrie informed his parents, Christopher Laundrie and Roberta Laundrie, that he had murdered Gabrielle Petito,” Petito’s lawsuit alleges. “The same day, Christopher Laundrie and Roberta Laundrie spoke to attorney Steve Bertolino and sent him a warrant on September 2, 2021.”

The young couple had left New York for their trip on July 2, the same day of their engagement.

Brian Laundrie returned home alone on September 1 before disappearing himself, sparking a manhunt that ultimately led to his corpse at a Florida wildlife preserve in October. Laundrie took the blame for Petito’s death in a notebook found near his remains.
