Two other coaches have joined former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores’ class action lawsuit alleging discrimination against black candidates for top coaching and management positions in the National Football League (NFL). ), according to an amended complaint filed Thursday.

Flores, who is black, was fired as head coach of the Dolphins in January after back-to-back seasons with winning records. In February, he filed his lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan, accusing the NFL and its 32 teams of racial discrimination.

The league previously said Flores’ case was unfounded, and the Dolphins filed for arbitration. Flores is now a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the amended complaint, two new plaintiffs — former Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks and league veteran Ray Horton — were included.

The lawsuit said Wilks had no “meaningful chance of success” in his role with the Cardinals, which he held for the 2018 season, before he was “unjustly and discriminatoryly terminated” in December.

The Cardinals said the decisions they made after the 2018 season were difficult.

“But as we said at the time, they were fully motivated by what was in the best interests of our organization and necessary for the betterment of the team,” they said in a statement.

“We are satisfied that the facts reflect this and demonstrate that these allegations are false.”

Horton was defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans before interviewing for head coach in January 2016. In the complaint, Horton said the interview was a “sham” conducted to comply with the “Rooney Rule “, which states that minority candidates must be considered. for top coaching and staff positions.

The Titans did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The NFL declined to comment on the two added complainants.

Flores also accused Dolphins owner Stephen Ross of offering him $100,000 for every loss in 2019 as an inducement to help him get a high draft pick. Flores said he refused to comply.

Ross flatly denied the accusation.

The Denver Broncos and New York Giants were also named in the lawsuit against Flores, who claims the two teams conducted sham interviews with him to satisfy the Rooney rule.

The NFL and teams have denied Flores’ claims.
