Kristoffer Ajer has joined Premier League newcomers Brentford from Celtic on a five-year contract for an initial £ 13.5million.
Ajer, who is highly rated and was also a target for Norwich, had a medical exam this week and was not part of the Celtic squad which drew 1-1 with FC Midtjylland in the first leg of the Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday.
Ajer’s transfer fee could increase further along with the performance bonuses.
Brentford head coach Thomas Frank said: “We wanted another center-back, and Kris was our first choice. We think he fits the specific profile of the job perfectly, especially on the ball.
“Kris is very calm and knows how to find the right passes between the lines. His level when he advances the ball is very high.
“As a defender he has the physique you need and he won his duels when he was playing in the Scottish league. He can help us in both boxes, with his strength in the air.
“He’s a player at a good age, and we think he’s coming in right away and he’s ready to play in the Premier League. But he also fits the way we want to recruit players and work with them. .
“He can develop as a player and Brentford FC and Kris can take it to the next level in the years to come.”
Sky in Germany reported last month that Bayer Leverkusen were in talks on a possible deal for the Norway international, who still had a year left on his contract with Celtic.
Ajer had been with Celtic since 2016 and after a loan from Kilmarnock in 2016/17, signed a new four-year contract with the Hoops in 2018.
Serie A club AC Milan were also keen to sign him before ending their long-standing interest in pursuing Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori. Rumors linked the 23-year-old to Newcastle as well.
Ajer, who has scored two goals in 47 appearances for Celtic in the 2020/21 season, said last month: “I have a year left in the contract and that’s what I’m focusing on, but of course , something could happen this summer.
“I’m going to join it and stay true to the club, but in order for the club and I to have the best possible starting point (for the negotiations), something’s probably for the best to happen this year.”
Ajer is Brentford’s second arrival this summer after recently signing Frank Onyeka from FC Midtjylland on a work permit.
The Nigerian midfielder has been announced as the Bees’ first signing as a Premier League club on a five-year contract after arriving in the UK on Sunday.
