Brent Jones blames Jimmy Garoppolo for Broncos loss in rant

Former San Francisco 49ers tight end Brent Jones was offended by everything Jimmy Garoppolo did in the 49ers’ 11-10 loss to the Broncos on Sunday: not just his “awful” play, but even his smile and her hair.

During an appearance on KNBR’s Tom Tolbert and Adam Copeland podcast, Jones tore Garoppolo apart after the quarterback’s first start since Trey Lance was ruled out for the season with an ankle injury.

“I blame it, I don’t do this very often, in fact I almost don’t do it at all. Jimmy Garoppolo was awful,” Jones said Tuesday. “What the hell? When you’re a professional football player and a quarterback, you know where the back of the end zone is. It was so outrageous. While I was shouting, ‘What are you thinking?’ He’s throwing a pick-six, so I’m looking for safety.

In his first start since Lance underwent season-ending surgery for a broken ankle, Garoppolo came out from behind his own end zone for a safety, among other glaring errors on offense.

The quarterback also threw an interception and lost a fumble as the 49ers offense fended off the ball seven times and committed three turnovers.

“You know since we got Jimmy, I’ve been pretty supportive of Jimmy, and I’ve tried to say that along the way,” said Jones, who is a three-time Super Bowl champion with the 49ers. “And he’s not perfect, he does a crazy thing or two every game and we talked about it, even when Trey was the starter. I said ‘remember, the world isn’t totally rosy with Jimmy in there.’

After the game, Garoppolo was seen smiling during a trade with Broncos offensive lineman Cam Fleming, who was his teammate for three seasons with the Patriots.

Jones expressed his displeasure with Garoppolo’s happy behavior after such an ugly loss.

“But I have to say, and I don’t think I’ve said it before, after playing horribly and you’re the reason your team lost the game, you’re not smiling and rejoicing that you handed the game over. ‘other team after the game. . I’ve never seen that from a quarterback, it’s never been good,’ Jones said, before naming quarterback legends, some with whom he played.

“Steve Young? Certainly not. Joe Montana? Surely not. Brett Favré? Hell of a chance. You think [Broncos quarterback] Russell Wilson laughs after throwing a pick, coming out of the end zone for a safety and dropping a ball and playing horribly and his team 1-2 and the reason they lost the game? It almost looked like he didn’t care.

“It was so frustrating, and maybe I was just angry because the game was so lousy. If it’s me, I run for the locker room. I don’t smile, I don’t talk to anyone for a while. week if you play like that. I just don’t understand his temper, but it was really frustrating. Icing on the cake,” Jones said.

Jones, who spent his entire 11-year NFL career with the 49ers, played with Montana and Young. The retired All-Pro tight end explained what he expects to see from Garoppolo going forward.

“I want to see Jimmy grab a few receivers and talk to them, I want to see him pat his linemen on the shoulder and say, ‘I need some time,'” Jones said. “I still see him sitting there posing and no one is taking GQ pictures on the sidelines. I want to see emotion, I want to see quarterback, but they still show him sitting there, stoic, posing. I want to see disheveled hair, how about that?

“I want my quarterback to go all out. I’m not saying he doesn’t, but it sounds like you know, well, damn it, I had to take a pay cut this year. It’s not about me, I’m just here to have fun. High five. Yeah, we got smoked.
