Boxer Edgar Berlanga ruffled some feathers on Saturday with a reference to Mike Tyson following his unanimous decision victory over Roamer Alexis Angulo.
The super middleweight fighter appeared to try to bite Angulo in the seventh round of the fight. The video showed Berlanga trying to gnaw on Angulo’s left shoulder. He would explain his actions after achieving victory.

“It was because he was throwing elbows. I was about to give him a Mike Tyson. He kept throwing elbows. I didn’t want to cut myself. I was ready to bite him.Mike Tyson,” he said via MMA Junkie.
Berlanga’s remark didn’t sit well with some, and he issued an apology in a series of tweets.
“I want to apologize for my actions and what I said yesterday about being bitten by Mike Tyson. I was in the moment and got a little ahead of myself. does not take away from the embarrassment I have caused myself, my team, the highest ranks and many others,” he wrote.
“I reacted badly and I take full responsibility. In the future, I will be more attentive and encouraging in my behavior. Again, I apologize.”
Tyson’s infamous bite happened in his second fight against Evander Holyfield in 1997. Tyson bit off a one-inch piece from Holyfield’s ear and spat it out. Tyson was then disqualified. He would say in later interviews that the bite was in retaliation for multiple headbutts from Holyfield.

Berlanga moved to 20-0 with the win. He is currently the WBO North American Boxing Organization super middleweight champion. He clinched the title in October 2021.
