Border Patrol agents rescued 13 illegal immigrants trapped in a U-Haul truck without oxygen, Customs and Border Protection said Friday. It was one of many rescues performed by the men and women in green.

CBP said officers in the El Paso area located the migrants, all from Mexico, in a box truck. They were smuggled in without access to oxygen and locked inside.

Officials said the migrants were unharmed, did not require further medical attention and were later deported under the Title 42 Public Health Order, which allows for the prompt deportation of migrants from states. The dead included a 13- and 14-year-old from Guatemala and two 16-year-olds from Mexico, authorities said. The truck was carrying 73 people when it was discovered on June 27.

On Wednesday, officers also rescued two smuggled migrants who had been abandoned by their smuggler. Both suffered from dehydration and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

CBP said officers in the area, in a single week, disrupted 18 human trafficking programs involving vehicles, as well as rescues and arrests of gang members and criminals.

“These events over the past seven days demonstrate just how complex our border environment has become and the determination of our Border Patrol officers to operationally adapt as necessary to deal with any situation at the border,” said Gloria I.
