Boeing CEO Testifies Before US Senate
Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun has already announced his intention to retire by the end of the year. But for Sen. Josh Hawley, that’s not soon enough.
During a heated argument Tuesday during the hearing on Boeing’s failing safety culture, the Missouri Republican asked Calhoun how much money he had received. Calhoun declined to answer directly, only saying, “It’s a significant amount.”
Hawley cited Boeing’s reported $32.8 million salary for his 2023 paycheck, which represents a 45% increase from the previous year.
After Calhoun admitted that the company had not made a profit during his four years as CEO and that its stock price had declined during that time, Hawley again cited the salary and the raise and said, “If anyone came out on top in this, it was you.”
“Why didn’t you resign?” Hawley continued.
“Senator, I stand by it. I’m proud to have taken this job. I’m proud of this safety record and I’m proud of our employees at Boeing,” Calhoun responded.
“You’re proud of that safety record?” Hawley asked incredulously.
“I’m proud of every action we’ve taken,” Calhoun responded.
“All the actions you took?” Hawley asked again.
“Yes, sir,” said Calhoun.
“Wow, that’s news for you,” Hawley concluded.
