“People don’t realize that Senator Menendez is like a rock star from Hudson County,” Vainieri said in September, just after Menendez’s initial indictment.

This is the first endorsement of Murphy by a county organization, having both symbolic and practical significance. Not only does this show that Menendez’s home base Dems are ready to go, but it means Murphy will get the coveted “county line” in the densely populated, heavily Democratic county just across the river Hudson, opposite New York.

In a statement, Hudson Democrats praised Murphy for “his strong record of advocating for progressive policy initiatives” and did not mention Menendez.

Background: Menendez grew up in Union City in northern Hudson County and lived there much of his life, although he most recently resided in nearby Englewood Cliffs in Bergen County. Menendez built his political career in Hudson, first being elected to the Union City school board in the 1970s before representing the county in the state Legislature, House of Representatives and Senate. UNITED STATES.

Menendez was a Hudson County power broker until his indictment. His son, Rob Menendez, took over his old House seat in 2022 after Albio Sires retired with the approval of local Democrats.

Menendez has not said whether he will run for re-election, but has made provocative statements in recent weeks, including on a Wednesday morning to welcome the launch of Tammy Murphy’s campaign.

The mayors of all but one of Hudson County’s municipalities joined the statement supporting Tammy Murphy.

And after? If Menendez chooses to run for re-election, his son may have to choose between running for re-election on a slate aligned with his father or on a slate opposed to him. The only Hudson County mayor absent from the endorsement statement was Ravi Bhalla of Hoboken, who was considering becoming a primary challenger to the younger Menendez.

A poll taken in Stockton late last month found that 71 percent of New Jersey residents have an unfavorable opinion of the senator.
