  • Blue Origin intends to take tourists through the so-called Karman Line.
  • The billionaire race for space is big business.
  • The trip is the culmination of a 20-year journey for Bezos with his company, Blue Origin.

Amazon billionaire founder Jeff Bezos and his New Shepard rocket crew took off from the West Texas desert on Tuesday, bound for space and glory and returned to Earth unharmed about 11 minutes later. .

“Congratulations to all of Team Blue, past and present, for reaching this historic moment in the history of spaceflight. This first crew of astronauts made their mark in the space history books, opening the door through which many will pass after. ” tweeted Bezos’ space tourism company Blue Origin.

The crew had spectacular views of Earth from space as well as three or four minutes of weightlessness before returning. The booster rocket landed smoothly about seven minutes after takeoff. The craft containing the astronauts landed with parachutes a few minutes later.

Bezos launched not only rapid space travel, but what the world’s richest man hopes will be a profitable business. Blue Origin is planning two more flights this year alone. Tuesday’s flight marked the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
