Birmingham Zoo mourns death of African lion Kwanza

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (AP) – A 16-year-old male African lion from Birmingham Zoo died Tuesday after being diagnosed with lymphoma.

Birmingham Zoo and its staff were closely monitoring and treating the animal for age-related health issues, including kidney disease.

A statement from the zoo said that an outside lab confirmed the presence of lymphoma, a cancer common in domestic cats that has also been seen in big cats like lions and tigers.

Earlier this month, Kwanza was treated with a combination of chemotherapy drugs and oral steroids in hopes of slowing the progression of the disease.

The zoo said the animal initially responded to medical treatment, but then its appetite waned and the difficult decision was made to euthanize it.
