Emma Raducanu’s win sees Great Britain finish day one level with Czech team

Emma Raducanu made a winning start to her career in the Billie Jean King Cup and won her first professional match on clay with a 7-5 7-5 win over Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova.

Raducanu’s victory saw Great Britain finish the opening day 1-1 at the Cesky club in Prague, following Harriet Dart’s 6-1 6-0 loss to Marketa Vondrousova.

The 19-year-old Britain’s No.1 hadn’t played a match on clay since the junior French Open in 2018 but rose to the challenge in impressive fashion.

Raducanu had to show all of her fighting skills, saving a set point at 4-5 in the first set and then fighting back 1-4 down in the second to give hope to Anne Keothavong’s side after finishing the day locked at 1-1.

“This one means so much to me,” Raducanu said on the pitch after his win.

“It’s my first Billie Jean King Cup game and to represent my team on clay, in my first professional game on clay, is truly amazing.

“We’re still in it, we’re still in this battle and it’s all to play for tomorrow.”
