Bill Maher says Biden’s far left makes it hard to ‘convince’ centrist Democrats to vote for him

HBO comedian and late-night host Bill Maher lamented over the weekend that President Biden’s recent rhetoric and embrace of far-left policies has made it increasingly difficult to “convince” Democratic centrists that their opinions are always aligned with the party.

In an interview Sunday on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” Maher predicted a landslide victory for Republicans in Tuesday’s midterm elections, suggesting that Biden’s efforts to appease the far-left progressive wing of the Party Democrats could be costing them critical congressional seats.

Maher pointed to Biden’s interview last month with a TikTok transgender activist, during which the president said it was “wrong” for states to ban gender-affirming health care. His comments came shortly after the administration released a series of documents encouraging sex reassignment surgery and hormone treatments for minors.

“Real Time” host Bill Maher predicted that Republicans would regain control of both houses of Congress.

“Biden brought the TikTokers into his office about a week ago as kind of a Hail Mary, I guess, with this election, because, you know, the generation doesn’t vote a lot, but if they do, they think they’re gonna vote Democrat,” Maher said.

“And he got into gender-reconstructive surgery, which, you know, this generation thinks is the civil rights movement of its time,” he continued. “But, you know, for the people I’ve tried to convince that Biden is a centrist, I kind of understand when they see something like that, and they say, what do you mean by Biden? is a centrist? Here he is going all out on this issue. He just completely sold himself…”

Zakaria said he finds it “strange” that Biden, once considered a mainstream Democrat, has outdone his predecessor on liberal issues.

“The thing that strikes me strangely about Joe Biden, you remember when Obama picked him, Obama was picking him a bit to balance the ticket to the right…people thought he [Obama] was very liberal. And Joe Biden was that traditional white man…now he’s clearly on Obama’s leftist policies,” he said.

Maher agreed, adding that Democrats will be forced to deal with the ramifications of the party’s leftward shift when Republicans regain control of Congress.

“Yes, because the party has settled there, and it doesn’t want to go against what it sees as the base,” he said. “You know, I just think the Democrats are going to find out that wasn’t a good strategy.”

In an earlier interview on comedian Bill Burr’s “Monday Morning Podcast,” the “Real Time” host blamed “woke culture” for giving the GOP an Election Day victory. Maher said at the time that the left had gone “super crazy” in ways the average American “don’t understand” and can’t relate to.

“The left has gone super crazy with a lot of crap that the average American has never voted for, doesn’t recognize in this country, doesn’t want,” he told Burr.

But with Republicans in charge, Maher said the country should prepare for the end of democracy, echoing Democratic pundits who have adopted similar rhetoric as Election Day approaches.

“Democracy is on the ballot, and unfortunately it’s going to lose and once it’s gone, it’s gone. It’s not someone who can change their mind upside down. It’ is the kind,” he told his viewers in a grim monologue on Saturday night.

Maher also claimed that once the Republicans took over both houses of Congress“they’ll start impeaching Biden and never stop” on a myriad of things, making the president a “paralyzed duck when he comes up against the Trump-Kari Lake 2024 ticket.”
