Big E ‘didn’t expect’ to transfer to SmackDown and return to Tag Team New Day after WWE title run, but ‘appreciates’ peer support

When Big E finally became WWE Champion, large sections of WWE rejoiced to see massive talent finally make it to the top of the card.

While the New Day man excelled at increasing his own worth and titles in the mainstream, in the ring WWE booked him to have a pretty indescribable run until Brock Lesnar took the belt from him at day 1 in a five-man fatal match. .

Big E was WWE Champion for four months

Hopefully his four months as champion won’t be his last, but WWE almost immediately sent the 35-year-old back to SmackDown to join Kofi Kingston on New Day once again.

talkSPORT had the chance to speak to Big E during Super Bowl week and we asked him what he was told about his retirement from the title shot.

“My goal has been to control what I can. We’ve had several talks and I’m sure I’ve told you before about meditation and how much it’s helped me,” Big E said.

“But, it’s my job. I focus on being the performer and doing my best with what I’m given, that’s my goal.

“But, I don’t want all of this to feel like a loss of being with Kofi and Woods. It is my greatest pleasure. For me, it was a transition that I didn’t expect at this point in my career,” Big E admitted.

“I had hoped to come back up and try to win back the WWE Championship again. But, we have a pretty big champion [Roman Reigns] and a pretty big headline on SmackDown too, you never know.

“Right now my focus is to control what I can and do my best with what I’m given, and that’s always been my focus.”

Reports circulated after the title loss that several of Big E’s backstage peers at WWE were “upset” by his loss of the title and felt that WWE could have done more with his title run.

Big E is just thrilled to have made so many good connections that people care.

“It means to the world that I have the respect of my peers because beyond money, fame or success, I think the way you behave as a human being, the how you interact with your peers, friends and strangers matters.

“My thing is that I tried to have more light in my life. I want to receive more and give more too. Makes me think, I had to do something along the way to get so many people to be so supportive. So those are the things that I really cherish and appreciate,” Big E said.
