WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden will limit travel from India from Tuesday on advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as India battles a deadly second wave of coronavirus infections.
The policy will not apply to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or other exempt individuals, according to a White House official.
India topped 200,000 Covid-19 deaths on Wednesday, becoming the fourth country to do so. Overall, India has recorded around 18 million cases, just behind the United States with over 32 million cases.
The surge in new infections has pushed Indian hospitals to breaking point, leading to a shortage of oxygen, hospital beds and other essential supplies.
