Biden gets poor marks on crucial issues, like inflation, ahead of midterms: poll

President Joe Biden has received low marks on things many Americans see as critical issues ahead of the midterm elections, including inflation, according to a new poll.

Only three in 10 Americans approve of the work Biden has done to fix inflation, the nation’s top concern, according to Monmouth University’s poll of 806 Americans released Monday.

The president got a 30% approval rating on his handling of inflation, a 32% approval rating on his handling of crime and a 31% approval rating on his handling of immigration – the three key issues named by Republicans surveyed in the poll.

Biden also scored low on the top concerns of Democrats polled. Only 30% of those polled approved of his gun control work and 31% approved of his handling of abortion issues.

He earned the highest approval rating for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic with half approval — but that question was at the back of the minds of the majority of Americans polled last month.

Americans surveyed ranked inflation, crime, and elections and voting as their top concerns.

“Obviously Republicans are going after issues where Biden — and by extension the Democratic Party — is weakest,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent polling institute at Monmouth University. “But it’s also worth noting that Biden doesn’t provide a rallying point for Democratic voters on some of the issues, such as abortion, that his party relies on to motivate its own base.”

Biden’s overall approval rating is net negative, with 54% disapproving of his presidency and 38% approving.

His rating has remained about the same among Monmouth pollsters for months. It oscillates between 36% and 39% approval and 54% to 58% disapproval since the beginning of the year.

About half of those polled also said Biden was doing worse than they thought as president.

Congress’s approval rating is even lower than the president’s. According to the poll, 66% of Americans disapprove of the work he does and only 23% approve. However, the rating has improved from its recent low of 15% to 78% in June.

The poll also found that only 23% of Americans believe the United States is heading in the right direction, while 74% said it has taken the wrong path.
