Biden DHS releases record report on after-hours migrant apprehension

Biden administration officials in Washington waited until 8:25 p.m. Wednesday to release a record migrant apprehension report that found Border Patrol agents along the southwest border apprehended more than 222,000 people in May – the highest one-month total dating back to the Clinton administration. The timing breaks with the past practice of releasing border figures during business hours and, frequently, at news conferences about new data.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials waited until late Wednesday evening to release the May Southwest Border Migration Report which confirms a Breitbart Texas report from earlier that month showing the arrest of 222,656 migrants who illegally crossed the border from Mexico. The report shows the largest number of migrants arrested in a single month since January 2000.

CBP officials tried to blame the record report on the deportation and re-entry of migrants tied to the Title 42 lawsuit.

“The large number of deportations during the pandemic has contributed to a higher than usual number of migrants making multiple attempts to cross the border, which means that the total number of encounters somewhat overestimates the number of individuals arriving at the border,” CBP officials said in the report’s release letter.

However, Border Patrol agents deported only 42% of migrants apprehended along the southwestern border. These Title 42 evictions included 90,650 single adults and 9,850 family units.

The report goes on to show that the number of “unique individuals” jumped 15% from the previous month – 177,793 migrants. The report also shows a 21% increase in the number of unaccompanied migrant children in May and an 8% increase in the number of apprehended family units.

“Current U.S. border restrictions have not changed: single adults and families encountered at the southwest border will continue to be deported, where applicable, under Title 42,” the CBP commissioner said. , Chris Magnus, in the written statement. “As temperatures begin to rise in the summer, smugglers will continue to exploit vulnerable populations and recklessly endanger the lives of migrants for financial gain.”

This is the third month in a row that Border Patrol agents have apprehended more than 200,000 migrants. Between March 1 and May 31, officers apprehended a total of 636,972 migrants. This total does not include migrants who fled without being apprehended.

Since the beginning of fiscal year 22, which began on October 1, 2021, Border Patrol agents have apprehended 1,536,899 migrants. With four months to go, the total number of apprehensions is just below the FY21 total of 1,734,686 migrants. That total will likely be exceeded in the June report.

“The terrain along the southwestern border is extreme, the summer heat is severe and the miles of desert that migrants must travel after crossing the border are unforgiving,” concluded Commissioner Magnus. “Our message to those who would attempt to enter the United States illegally remains the same – do not make the dangerous journey only to be removed.”

However, CBP officials are bracing for a further increase in migrant arrests. CBP officials warned:

In response to the increase in migration experienced by nations in the hemisphere, DHS is executing a comprehensive, whole-of-government plan to manage the increase in the number of migrants encountered at our border, as noted by Secretary of Security interior Alejandro N. Mayorkas in an April 26 note.

This includes increasing resources, increasing efficiency, administering consequences, building the capacity of non-governmental organizations, targeting and disrupting transnational criminal organizations and smugglers, and deterring migration irregular in partnership with other federal government agencies and with nations throughout the hemisphere.
