When did Americans realize that their elected president should not be entrusted with the most important decisions that affect our nation, especially our national security?
When historians look at the pivot of the Biden presidency — and what initially sparked the Democrats’ expected collapse midterm on Tuesday — they will point to Afghanistan and the series of disastrous decisions the president made in July and August 2021. They have only led to the worst debacle in US foreign policy since the fall of Saigon in 1975. They have also led the public to wonder if the president they came from to elect was truly fit for office. This is an issue that has only gained negative momentum since.
Although Biden and the media tried to blame President Donald Trump for the chaos resulting from his mismanagement of Afghanistan, the truth was that Biden inherited a stable but uncertain situation in Afghanistan. While Trump had made it clear he was withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan and ending America’s longest war, he also failed to set a timetable for leaving. And no one – let alone the Taliban – doubted that Trump would return US troops to the country if needed. The man who eradicated ISIS was not a person to play with.
WITHDRAWAL FROM AFGHANISTAN: A POLITICAL TURNING POINT FOR HOW THE PUBLIC FEELS ABOUT BIDEN
When Biden took charge, however, he dismissed any pretense of a carefully organized or thought-out pullout.
First, the July 2 decision to close Bagram Air Base, the hub of US presence and security. Six days later, Biden shocked everyone, including the Afghan government, by announcing he was accelerating the US withdrawal deadline to August 31, two weeks earlier than originally planned. By July 21, the Taliban controlled half of Afghanistan, despite Biden’s assurances to Americans that the country’s collapse was “not inevitable.” Three weeks later, the Taliban took the capital Kabul, where the remaining American presence had shrunk to the perimeter of the American embassy.
What happened next was a human tragedy and a series of disastrous optics. While Biden assured the public that there would be no footage of helicopters leaving the roof of the US Embassy as happened during the abandonment of Saigon in 1975, which they have obtained, these are images of desperate Afghans chasing an American C-17 down the Kabul airport runway…even clinging to the plane’s wheel arches as it took off, then falling until the death. Meanwhile, the embassy grounds were overwhelmed by thousands of Afghans fleeing Taliban reprisals.

Biden’s other broken promise was that no American would be left behind. In fact, hundreds of Americans were stuck in the country along with thousands of Afghans who had loyally served with us against the Taliban. It took private agencies like Project Dynamo to do what Biden’s team wouldn’t or couldn’t do, which was to make sure Americans who wanted in could get out.
Then, on August 16, the suicide bombing killed 13 US service members, followed by a failed attempt to eliminate another potential suicide bomber, which resulted in the deaths of an Afghan aid worker and seven children.
BIDEN TALKING ABOUT ACHIEVEMENTS IS ‘MOST EFFECTIVE MESSAGE FROM DEMOCRATS,’ SAYS POLLER
Meanwhile, Biden’s statement in an interview that none of his generals disagreed with the decision to flee Afghanistan turned out to be another lie.
But perhaps the final blow to Biden’s reputation came with the airstrike on al-Qaeda leader Zawahiri while he was visiting Kabul. While the president and his team hoped it would make Biden look bad and bold — like when Donald Trump took out IRGC chief Suleimani — the public realized that really meant al-Qaeda was back in business in Afghanistan.

Indeed, we had come full circle, where we were when Operation Enduring Freedom was first launched more than 20 years earlier. The Taliban decided to mark our humiliation with a victory parade with some of the $7 billion in captured American equipment, from Humvees to attack helicopters. This video has become the emblem of the worst disaster in American foreign policy in more than 40 years – and the image of Biden not only incompetent but dishonest.
This impression was reflected in the polls. When Biden first announced plans to withdraw from Afghanistan in April, his approval rating was 52.5%. In late August, an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll showed his approval had dropped to 43%. He has never recovered since.
If Tuesday’s midterm elections turn out to be a disaster for Democrats, they can blame their policies on crime, on the border, on COVID lockdowns and their promotion of CRT and drag queens in backyards. children.

But it was ultimately the decisions of their president in Afghanistan that launched them into their downward spiral. It was in July and August 2021 that – to paraphrase Winston Churchill – those terrible words were first spoken against them: You are weighed in the balance and found wanting.
Starting with their general manager.
