President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden mourned the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, calling her “a stateswoman of unequaled dignity and steadfastness” who deepened the alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom, and whose “legacy will figure prominently”.
Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and who was her country’s beloved face and source of its strength for seven decades, died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday. She was 96 years old.

Biden said he first met the Queen in 1982 while traveling to the UK as part of a Senate delegation. The Bidens also met the Queen last summer on their first overseas trip as president and first lady.
The Bidens said the Queen “charmed us with her wit, moved us with her kindness and generously shared her wisdom with us.”
“In total, she met 14 American presidents. She helped Americans commemorate both the anniversary of the founding of Jamestown and the bicentennial of our independence. reminded us that ‘grief is the price we pay for love,'” they said.

The Bidens sent their “sincere condolences to the Royal Family, who mourn not only their Queen, but also their dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.”

Elizabeth’s doctors said earlier on Thursday they were “concerned for Her Majesty’s health” and that she was “resting comfortably” at Balmoral under medical supervision.

She died “peacefully” on Thursday afternoon, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
“The King and Queen Consort will stay at Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow,” Buckingham Palace said.
The royal was predeceased by her husband, Prince Philip, who spent more than seven decades supporting the Queen. The Duke of Edinburgh, Britain’s oldest wife, died in April 2021 at the age of 99. Elizabeth and Philip had been married for over 70 years and had four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

The coronation of the new king and the first official appearance as head of the Commonwealth is not yet scheduled – Charles is expected to spend the night at Balmoral with the rest of the royal family.
