Biden administration to purchase 500 million doses of Pfizer for worldwide distribution

The Biden administration plans to purchase 500 million doses of Pfizer coronavirus vaccine to distribute to other countries, significantly adding to its ongoing efforts to inoculate populations around the world, according to Three people knowing the plans.

The passage through the US government could lead to the shipment of 200 million doses of Pfizer worldwide this year, followed by an additional 300 million in the first half of 2022, according to people familiar with the plan.

President Joe Biden will announce the plan tomorrow before the G-7 meeting in the UK. A person familiar with the details said the plan will involve the distribution of all doses through the COVAX vaccine initiative to 92 developing countries and the African Union.
