Biden Admin set to give Ukraine billion-dollar arms package

President Joe Biden’s administration is ready to send Ukraine a billion-dollar arms package as early as Monday, according to a Reuters report.

The billion-dollar arms package is believed to be one of the largest aid packages the United States has sent to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February.

The billion-dollar weapons package will include “ammunition for long-range weapons and armored medical transport vehicles”, according to Reuters sources, who spoke to the outlet on condition of anonymity.

Specifically, the weapons package will include “ammunition for HIMARS, ammunition for NASAMS surface-to-air missile system and up to 50 M113 armored medical transports”, Reuters reported.

However, Reuters sources have warned that the current package, valued at $1 billion, could change ahead of its scheduled announcement on Monday.

The billion-dollar arms package is believed to arrive just days after the Pentagon announced it would send weapons and equipment from the US Department of Defense’s inventory to Ukraine worth up to reach $550 million.

“The United States continues to stand with Allies and partners from more than 50 nations to provide vital security assistance to support Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity against aggression. of Russia,” a State Department press release said.

The next billion-dollar arms package would be funded by the Presidential Drawing Authority.

As Reuters explained:

The new package would be funded by the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), in which the president can authorize the transfer of items and services from U.S. inventory without congressional approval in response to an emergency.

HIMARS playing a key role in the artillery duel between Ukraine and Russia has been described as “crushing” with very little movement from the frontline in Ukraine’s eastern Donbass region.

In May, Congress authorized $40 billion in economic and military aid to Ukraine after Russian leader Vladimir Putin invaded the country as Americans suffered from rising inflation and food shortages.
