England and Arsenal star Beth Mead has suffered an ACL injury that puts her participation in the World Cup in doubt.
The 27-year-old forward scored 37 goals in 102 appearances for her club and 29 goals in 50 for her country, winning the top scorer award with a tally of six at Euro 2022.
“We can confirm that Beth Mead suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during our game against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday,” an Arsenal statement read.
“Unfortunately, this means Beth is sidelined for an extended period. She will see a surgeon in the next few days, after which further details on timelines will be established.
“Everyone at the club will now support Beth and work hard to get her back on the pitch as soon as possible.”
Arsenal rivals Chelsea have also confirmed that midfielder Pernille Harder will be out for “a significant period” after undergoing surgery for a hamstring injury sustained on international duty with Denmark.
