BEREA, Ky. (LEX 18) – A man from Berea finally returned home on Monday after spending 109 days in multiple hospitals battling COVID-19.
Meanwhile, Tom Howser spent 64 days on a ventilator. His doctor at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, Dr Peter Roumanos, said it was very rare and that Tom was a fighter.
“He worked very hard,” Roumanos said. “He was one of my favorite patients. He was motivated, his family was really involved. He was just a great patient.”
All that hard work paid off when Tom was fired to return home to Berea on Monday.
His family escorted him out of his room and down the hall to a crowd of supporters who cheered him on as he left the hospital.
“I want to thank my wife and family,” Tom said tearfully in a brief ceremony.
His wife, Patty, also held back tears as she thanked everyone who worked with Tom.
“It’s been a long struggle,” she said. “We won the battle. I have no words to describe how much I appreciate everything. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.”
Now Tom is in Berea recovering. His family is confident that he will recover well, as he has proven time and time again that he is a fighter. Before COVID-19, he fought and conquered cancer.
