Benfica could have seven players ruled out of the Champions League second leg against Liverpool at Anfield if they lack discipline in Lisbon

Benfica stars must walk a tightrope in the first leg of their Champions League draw with Liverpool or risk huge consequences.

Seven of their first team are one yellow card away from serving a one-game suspension ahead of Tuesday night’s clash – which you can hear live on talkSPORT.

Benfica risk losing several stars due to suspension

Any player who picks up three cards in Europe’s elite competition misses a match by suspension.

If poor discipline comes into play at the Estadio da Luz, Spain full-back Alex Grimaldo and former Manchester City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi are two of Nelson Verissimo’s key defenders at risk.

Both will face a tough test against the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota as they aim to keep the Reds at bay.

There are also problems in midfield, with former Borussia Dortmund playmaker Julian Weigl and influential Joao Mario also walking on thin ice.

The pair have played consistently for the Portuguese giants this season, making 42 and 38 appearances in all competitions respectively.

Forwards Goncalo Ramos, Rafa Silva and Roman Yaremchuk are also one yellow card away from being eliminated from the return leg on April 13.

Silva, 28, would be a huge miss after scoring 12 goals and contributing 17 assists so far this season.

Liverpool themselves have Jota and Mane on a tightrope ahead of the game in the Portuguese capital.

Both picked up cards in the Reds’ group stage clashes against Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan.

Benfica come into the game after a 3-2 away loss to Braga on Friday, leaving their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League on hold.

Braga scored twice in the right, before Premier League-linked Darwin Nunez netted from the 74th-minute penalty, and Portugal international Mario equalized for Benfica three minutes later.

Vitor Oliveira, however, put the home side ahead in the 79th minute to secure his side’s three points.

Liverpool, meanwhile, travel to Lisbon after a 2-0 win over Watford.

Jota and a Fabinho penalty helped Klopp’s men trail league leaders Manchester City as they sought a second Premier League title.
