Ben Stokes risks up to three months on the sidelines after it was revealed he would need surgery for the finger injury he suffered this week.

The versatile England player broke his left index finger while on the pitch in the Rajasthan Royals’ Indian Premier League (IPL) opener against the Punjab Kings on Monday.

Stokes is now set to miss England’s home test series against New Zealand in June, as well as the limited series against Sri Lanka in June and July.

England are hoping to return for the one-day matches against Pakistan, which start on July 8.

Rajasthan confirmed earlier this week that Stokes will no longer play any role in the IPL, with a new x-ray on Thursday showing the extent of the injury.

This happened when he took a deep dive to see the Kings’ Chris Gayle, after which he immediately left the field for treatment.

Stokes will return from India on Saturday before undergoing surgery in Leeds on Monday.
