Ben Foster remembers punch in West Brom dressing room between James Morrison and Saido Berahino after striker’s costly mistake left team ‘smoking’ – ‘It would have only been one way’

Facing a relegation battle is one of the most stressful experiences in football, just ask West Brom.

In 2013-14, the Baggies were battling to avoid the fall of their fourth straight campaign in the top flight when things started to get a little too close for comfort.

Ben Foster was part of Pepe Mel’s squad and as the season progressed towards mid-April the need to score points became more and more important.

A home game against Cardiff City was deemed relegation at six points and after winning 3-2 West Brom worked tirelessly to secure all three points.

Unfortunately, a moment of selfish play from Saido Berahino proved costly with the game ending 3-3, leading to an almighty fall in the locker room.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive, Foster said: “The best I’ve seen was at West Brom and that was James Morrison and Saido Berahino.

“We were playing Cardiff and we were leading 3-2 and it was the last minute of the game and we’re just trying to kill the game.

“We get the ball back and we break and instead of running towards the corner flag, Saido tries to score another goal.

Berahino’s misjudgment led to locker room crash, Foster says

“They tackle it, break the other end, they hit the post and it goes in. Oh my god, 3-3 at the last minute, furious.

“We walk into the locker room and James Morrison is the first one there and I think he swung for Saido, physically swung, but I don’t think he’s connected much.

“Anyway, at that point we all start to walk into the locker room and Mozza also tried to push him into a corner.

“Saido is a big boy, you know. Saido is a big strong boy and so Mozza tried to push him and Saido is just like ‘no I don’t have that’ and so he grabs him.

“It would have only been one way, to be honest with you, but at that point luckily we had just arrived and managed to separate them.”
