Chelsea and England left-back Ben Chilwell is expected to be out for at least the rest of the year with a knee injury.
The Blues had a sensational night out beating Juventus 4-0 in the Champions League, but it came at a cost as N’Golo Kante and 24-year-old Chilwell got injured. Kante’s knee injury is not considered as serious.
Chilwell’s scan results reveal Chilwell will be out for the remainder of 2021 because he damaged his anterior cruciate ligament, the Daily Telegraph reports.
ACL injuries often result in lengthy absences, however, the Telegraph adds that Chelsea are ready to delay the final decision on whether they can play against this season until the New Year.
The report also says Chilwell may need surgery, but the club are willing to try and let the injury heal naturally before reassessing.
Surgery would likely result in an absence of six to nine months, which would rule him out not only for this season but also for the start of the next campaign.
After taking back the left-back spot from Marcos Alonso, Chilwell made scintillating displays.
He has started the last six Premier League games and not only has he helped Tuchel’s side stay at the top of the table, but he has contributed three goals and one assist during that run.
Given Tuchel’s in-depth strength, he is hopeful that this won’t derail the club’s ambitions of winning a first league title since 2017 as well as retaining the Champions League.
