NEWARK, Del. – Ethan Baucom hit two homers and drove in four runs and Chris Thorburn added three hits as UNCW picked up a Colonial Athletic Association Series win at Delaware on Sunday with an 11-8 win at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Seahawks’ series win (23-15, 8-4 CAA) was their first road series victory since sweeping Kentucky in the 2019 season. The Blue Hens saw their record slip to 22-16 on the season and 6-6 in the league).
Baucom, who also finished with three hits, doubled in two runs on a six-run first inning. Thorburn also drove in two innings. Adding two-hit games for the Seahawks was Jac Croom, Matt Suggs and Bryan Arendt. Arendt scored her third home run of the season in that opening run.
First-year student Zane Taylor (3-0) took the win in 6.1 innings and struck out five.
Aidan Kane was one of four Blue Hens to finish with two hits. He doubled twice and scored twice. Joe Carpenter hit a three-run homer, his seventh of the season, in the seventh inning.
Starter Wyatt Nelson (2-1) gave up six runs in the first inning and took the loss.
How did it happen: UNCW sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning heave. Baucom opened the scoring with a two-run brace into left center space. Dillon Lifrieri followed by a double RBI to right center and two batters later, Suggs lifted a sack fly to center to make it 4-0. A batter later, Arendt curled the first pitch he saw over the left wall with a man on it to make it 6-0.
Inside the box score: The Seahawks were hit by four pitches on Sunday and finished the weekend beaten 13 times…Baucom reclaimed the lead as active NCAA career leaders with 61 homers…Thorburn and Croom both have eight-game hitting streaks… UNCW now leads the all-time series, 41-26.
