The self-defeating artwork created by Banksy sold on Thursday for a new record for the mysterious British street artist, according to auction house Sotheby’s.
“Love is in the Trash” initially auctioned off in 2018 for around $ 1.4 million at Sotheby’s London in a viral coup. The lower half of the canvas for “Girl With Balloon”, arguably Banksy’s best-known work, began to tear apart as soon as the hammer struck, sealing the original sale.
Its estimated selling price in September was around £ 4million to £ 6million – or $ 5.54million – $ 8.31million.
The partially shredded coin was auctioned on Thursday, where it sold for £ 18,582,000, or over $ 25.4 million, auction house announced. Thursday’s sale broke Banksy’s record since March when their painting of a boy playing with a toy nurse as a superhero sold for more than $ 20 million.
Banksy, the street artist whose true identity remains shrouded in secrecy, posted a video on Instagram saying they put a shredder inside the frame years ago, with a caption that read: “L ‘urge to destroy is also a creative urge. ” The quote was attributed by Banksy to Picasso, but was actually said by Mikhail Bakunin, a 19th century Russian who was a leading theorist of anarchism.
