Bandcamp Friday is back – The Verge

Bandcamp is bringing back its Bandcamp Fridays promotion where it’s waiving its discount on any money you spend buying music from artists or their labels on its marketplace. Historically, the company held the promotion on the first Friday of every month, and that seems to be the case this time around as well. According to its update page, Bandcamp Fridays are scheduled for September 2, October 7, November 4, and December 2.

Bandcamp says that when you buy music during a Bandcamp Friday, on average 93% of that money goes to the artist or label (the rest goes to payment processing fees). That’s compared to an average of 82% the rest of the time. He began promotion in 2020 in response to the impact of the pandemic on touring and concerts.

As far as I can tell, it’s been a few months since Bandcamp last Friday – according to a quick search of my inbox, the archives of the Bandcamp update page for the promotion, and some math (the page now says that she ran the promotion 21 times, where it said 17 times with four future dates listed), the last was May 6. After that, the company remained silent on the future of Bandcamp Fridays.

To be fair, a lot probably happened earlier this year. In March, Epic Games announced it was acquiring Music Marketplace, saying Bandcamp would “continue to operate as a standalone music marketplace and community,” but would play “an important role in Epic’s vision of create a creator marketplace ecosystem for content”. , technology, games, art, music and more.

At the time, Bandcamp co-founder and CEO Ethan Diamond said things would remain more or less business as usual for its users. He even promised that Bandcamp Fridays would continue, which they did for at least a little while.

Although the company did not immediately respond to The edgeasking for comment on why he took a break, I’m mostly glad to hear they’re back. Personally, there are Manchester Orchestra and Car Seat Headrest albums that I have in front of me, and it’s a perfect excuse to pick them up. And you?

Updated September 2, 12:30 p.m. ET: Updated to note that It’s Friday Bandcamp.
